چکیده

Introduction Submandibular gland sialolithiasis is a common disease treated by oral surgery, and many case reports have been presented in the Japanese medical literature[1-31]. However, the observation of salivary stones by scanning electron microscopy and electron probe X-ray microanalysis has not been widely reported[25-31]. Recently, we treated four cases of submandibular gland sialolithiasis by removal of the submandibular gland, and examined these stones with a scanning electron microscope (SEM) and electron probe X-ray microanalyzer (EPMA), as well as performing standard clinical sialographic and histopathologic examinations of the extirpated glands. In the present report, we compare our findings from these various methods of examination. Report of cases The clinical aspects of the four cases are summarized in Table 1.

MRI findings of papillary cystadenocarcinoma of the submandibular gland.

Papillary cystadenocarcinoma is an extremely rare malignant tumor of the salivary glands. Major locations of this neoplasm are the parotid gland, sublingual gland, and minor salivary glands, while occurrence in the submandibular gland is extremely rare. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings of this lesion have not been reported in the literature. Herein, we present a case of papillary cysta...

Sialolithiasis. Proposal for a new minimally invasive procedure: Piezoelectric surgery

Sialolithiasis is the presence of stones in the ducts of the salivary glands. Most episodes are unique, and 60-80% are located exclusively in the main excretory duct. The main clinical manifestations are swelling and pain typically before, during or after meals that decreases if the obstruction is not complete. The highest prevalence of lithiasis is in the submandibular gland -87%-, whose secre...

The MR imaging assessment of submandibular gland sialoadenitis secondary to sialolithiasis: correlation with CT and histopathologic findings.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE MR imaging has been proved to be effective in depicting wide variety of pathologic changes of the salivary gland. Therefore, we evaluated clinical usefulness of MR imaging for sialolithiasis. METHODS Sixteen patients with sialolithiasis of the submandibular gland underwent MR imaging. MR images of the glands were obtained with a conventional (T1-weighted), fast spin-ech...

Submandibular sialolithiasis with CT and scintigraphy: CT values and salivary gland excretion in the submandibular glands

Purpose Sialolithiasis is one of the most prevalent large obstructive disorders of the submandibular glands. The aim of this study was to investigate submandibular sialolithiasis with computed tomography (CT) and scintigraphy, with a particular focus on the relationship between CT values of the submandibular glands and their excretion rate. Materials and Methods Fifteen patients with submandi...
